The Arts Society Mid Cornwall meets in the afternoon of the second Wednesday of the month (except July and August). The illustrated lecture is followed by tea and friendly chit-chat during which our members talk to each other about all sorts of things –including the lecture!  Our Discovery Days enable members to focus on a topic or theme in greater depth.  We also organise day Visits to historical and cultural venues. This programme gives our members stimulating lectures and numerous opportunities to catch up with old friends, meet new people and visit new places. The Arts Society Mid Cornwall also makes an annual grant to encourage the love and appreciation of the arts by young people in Mid Cornwall.

We are a friendly group with a membership of around 175. We welcome new members, members guests and visitors who may join us for individual lectures.

History

The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) was founded in 1968 to promote and advance aesthetic education, to cultivate the appreciation and study of the decorative and fine arts, and to aid the conservation of our national artistic heritage. In 2017 NADFAS adopted the operating name of The Arts Society.

Our society was started in 1994 as Bodmin Decorative and Fine Arts Society, known as BODFAS, affiliated to NADFAS.  Its meetings were held in the Shire Suite in Bodmin until December 2019 when urgent repairs forced our removal to Wadebridge. The much delayed refurbishment plans of the whole building have prevented our return.

In January 2024, at an EGM, our Society voted to adopt The Arts Society Mid Cornwall as the name under which it will operate from 1st February 2024.  It was agreed that this name better reflects where we meet and the wide distribution of our members across Cornwall. 

We must keep looking ahead.  The pandemic forced us to change and adapt to the situation, so we all learnt about new technologies, like zoom, and continued to offer on-line lectures and study days and then in hybrid form.  We have now reverted to in-person only lectures as our members value the social aspect of our meetings and the teas afterwards.  We continue to look at new ways of doing things, and invite new speakers to come to us.  We are delighted when new members join us.
