Boyton School Artist's Workshop project 2024

Our Young Arts Sponsorship programme supported another project at a small school in the north of our area. Boyton Primary School’s Head Teacher, Mrs Katherine Davies told us all about it. The whole school was able to take part.  "It truly has been an experience the children will never forget – and their legacy will continue through the beautiful wall-hanging they created." Click Here for more details and photos.

Fowey Festival of Arts Children’s Art Competition 2024

The Arts Society Mid-Cornwall continued to sponsor this super competition open to children all over Cornwall.  The winner of the Young Artist of the Year Award, by public vote, was Wilby, in Year 3 with his brilliant painting of ‘A Fun Day out at Readymoney’.  Click here to see the painting and read a full report.

Wadebridge Primary Academy

In December 2021 The Art Society HQ in London were so concerned that the arts were suffering as a result of the pandemic that they offered member societies small seed grants to donate to a local arts cause.

Richard Brice, our Vice-President responsible for Young Arts, managed to obtain one of these grants to help Wadebridge Primary Academy with an exciting new project, the repurposing of a large underused upper floor common room as an art studio.

The school has about 450 pupils all of whom will benefit from this improvement. Up until now pupils have been taught art in normal classrooms with no storage space for art materials, no space for art projects and even worse, with carpeted floors.  Imagine the mess! In the new studio they have easy access to the full range of materials, mostly on open shelves. The floor is non-slip, easy to clean and the room is spacious with good artificial and natural light. 

Previously:

NADFAS Young Arts, now renamed Arts Volunteering, was set up to encourage young people to get ‘hands on’ experience of art creation and to learn about the various forms art takes and in so doing come to love and appreciate all that it can offer.

“I thought you might like to know about some of the activities your committee has helped to bring to fruition in recent years" said Vice President, Richard Brice who has responsibility for Arts Volunteering. The Art Society Bodmin allocates £500 each year out of its funds to initiate or support Young Arts projects.

For example, A level photography students at Bodmin College invited the founder members of BODFAS to sit for studio portraits. These were framed for display at our 25th Anniversary Garden Party and purchased and presented to the illustrious subjects.

We funded the construction of a’ Jolly Green Giant Head’ at St Mewan School. It is, I believe, still possible to see his eyes staring over the trees as you approach the School on the Truro Road towards St Austell.

We paid for an artist to work with the art teacher and pupils of The Beacon School Bodmin, to design, make and attach, a mosaic picture and frieze to the outside of the main school building.

We paid for the design and construction of a sculpture outside the Wadebridge Senior Academy and after that, the design and construction of a Friendship Bench for the playground of the Wadebridge Junior Academy. I was allowed to help with the copper beating on this last one.”

For the last five years we have supported the Fowey Festival of Arts Children’s Art Competition. Pre-Covid, two professional artists were paid to provide a day’s art training at Fowey School. We also provide the funds for prizes and certificates and for the winning pictures to be framed for display.

Each year has seen an increase in the number of entries. It has been so successful that the competition, which was originally open to all comers, is now limited to schools in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The Fowey River Gallery exhibits the winning pictures until the end of September. Visitors are able to vote for the painting that they think should win the ‘Artist of the Year Award’.  See here for two proud competitors and their work.
